Born in London of Nigerian/Irish heritage, Chi-chi Nwanoku OBE enjoys an international life as double bass principal, chamber and solo musician. She is Professor of double bass Historical Studies at the Royal Academy of Music. Chi-chi is the Founder, Artistic and Executive Director of the Chineke! Foundation, whose mission is “championing change and celebrating diversity in classical music” and supports and gives career opportunities to young Black & minority ethnic (BME) musicians. Chi-chi broadcasts regularly for BBC and featured on Desert Island Discs in 2018. In 2016 she won Black British Business Awards Person of the Year. Chi-chi was awarded the OBE in 2017 for Services to Music and In 2018 she won the Commonwealth Cultural Enterprise Award, Creative Industries Award at Variety Catherine Awards, was named in the Top 10 of the BBC Woman’s Hour, and was made an Honorary Doctor of Music at University of Chichester. In 2019 she was offered an Honorary Degree from the Open University. Chi-chi is a passionate advocate of the importance of music in everyone’s lives and is committed to teaching and sharing her love of music.
